Release Model
Bodhi Linux follows what we call a “semi-rolling” release cycle based around Ubuntu LTS (long-term support) releases. This means that every new major Bodhi Linux release is built on the latest Ubuntu LTS release. Bodhi has had six major releases to date:
- 6.y.z -> Based on Ubuntu 20.04 (supported – current major release until 2025)
- 5.y.z -> Based on Ubuntu 18.04 (supported – security updates until 2023)
- 4.y.z -> Based on Ubuntu 16.04 (no longer supported – dropped 2021)
- 3.y.z -> Based on Ubuntu 14.04 (no longer supported – dropped 2019)
- 2.y.z -> Based on Ubuntu 12.04 (no longer supported – dropped 2017)
- 1.y.z -> Based on Ubuntu 10.04 (no longer supported – dropped 2015)
We say Bodhi Linux is “semi-rolling” because users only need to re-install the operating system when there is a new major release (every two years) in order to always stay current on the latest version. All supported versions of Bodhi Linux can receive support through the Bodhi forums and get security updates from both the Bodhi and Ubuntu teams. The current major release for Bodhi Linux, in addition to getting security updates, receives general software updates for things found on our AppCenter and software requests in the Bodhi forums.
New major releases target release date of approximately six months following a new Ubuntu LTS release. Minor update releases are scheduled to happen every six months up to the next major release.
That being said – Bodhi Linux follows a strict “it’s ready when it’s ready” release model, meaning that we would rather release something late than meet a projected deadline and release something we consider low quality.
